PROVIDENCE – The city is taking part in the international Jane’s Walk Global Weekend Festival, in honor of urban activist Jane Jacobs, by hosting guided tours on May 6, 7 and 8.

The free walking tours are led by volunteer citizen tour guides who want to share their communities with others. Jane’s Walk tours engage the listener through sharing stories of the community’s history, helping them to better understand the democratic process of city planning and interaction among strangers who are neighbors.

This year, which coincides with what would have been Jacob’s 100th birthday, there will be 12 guided tours of Providence led by Elon Cook, Sarah Zurier, Alex Krogh-Grabbe, Lee Andrews, Jim Barnes, David Brussat, Deborah Del Gais, Fran Leazes, Erik Christiansen, Barbara Barnes, Dylan Peacock and Ella Boyan.

Providence-themed tours will include a bike ride from Nathan Bishop Middle School to Classical High School; Meeting Street, Providence’s second city center; an introduction to Wayland Square and a look at College Hill and the international slave trade.
