The walk is being hosted by The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation, a Rhode Island 501(c)(3) nonprofit established to raise awareness, encourage early detection and support research in hopes of a cure for esophageal cancer.
The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation worked with Rep. Patriica Serpa to have the State of Rhode Island recognize April as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month for the second year.
Esophageal adenocarcinoma is the fastest growing cancer in the western world and while almost all cases of esophageal cancer are fatal, survivors often suffer a lower quality of life after surgery. With no underlying cause, risk factors for esophageal cancer include: frequent heartburn, obesity, smoking and excessive drinking.
