PROVIDENCE – Several 38 Studios employees attended a Providence recruiting event by video game-creator Turbine Inc., according to WPRI-TV CBS 12.
More than 300 local applicants attended the recruiting event at the Westminster hotel, vying for 50 jobs with the Needham, Mass.-based company.
None of the 38 Studios employees would offer insight into the teetering financial status of former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s company, according to WPRI.
The gaming company, which was lured to Providence with a state $75 million loan guarantee, laid off an undisclosed number of employees after it missed payroll last week.
38 Studios managed to make an overdue $1.125 million payment to the state on Friday.
Executives from 38 Studios attempted to pay the state on Thursday, but, after finding out the check would bounce, the R.I. Economic Development Corporation refused payment.
The company managed a wire payment for $1,025,000 and a separate check for $100,000 on Friday, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee announced.
The $1.125 million guarantee fee, which is 1.5 percent of the outstanding loan amount, was due May 1.
Schilling posted on his Facebook wall yesterday, commending his company’s workers.
“The 38 team has shown breathtaking resilience through these incredibly challenging times. Helping each other with their daily lives, coming together like only a family would truly do,” said the post.
“Their efforts to assist each other have been something beyond explanation and defying anything that could be called a ‘job.’ They are strong and resolute, and determined to stand together as hard and as long as they can," said Schilling. “For this I thank them all, I am so proud of this team.”
