5 get funds from Hawthorn Fund

NEW BEDFORD – Five local programs focused on women and children in need are receiving a total of $23,000 from the Hawthorn Medical Associates Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.
“We are pleased to support these organizations that do so much to empower women and families in need in our region,” said James Gularek, CEO of Hawthorn Medical Associates. “Hawthorn recognizes the importance of supporting worthwhile programs that make a real difference in the communities we serve.”
Four organizations received grants of $4,500 each, including: Child & Family Services, The Women’s Center, the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts and the YWCA of Southeastern Massachusetts.
A fifth grant of $5,000 – a pledge payment on a three-year grant – was made to Catholic Social Services’ Sister Rose House for a women’s shelter that is scheduled to open in November 2014. Sister Rose House runs a dry men’s shelter in New Bedford.
The grants were made available through a $500,000 endowment by Hawthorn Medical Associates at the Community Foundation. HMA was founded in 1970 to provide care for patients in Southeastern Massachusetts while bringing physician specialists and services to the community that had not been available.
