1In the recently completed $3 million renovation of the museum, what were some of the changes made to the building itself, and what will visitors see in the architecture?

Our renovation focused on enhancing our building, the Newport Casino and a national historic landmark. Our goal was to open up the back half of the museum and create a cohesive architectural aesthetic with the front portion. In so doing, we revealed three original fireplaces that had been covered up for the last quarter-century.

2What are some of the more interesting aspects of the museum now, in terms of visitor experience?

Our new museum is engaging and fun for visitors of all ages. We include more technology as a way to make the history of tennis more relevant and accessible to a worldwide audience. The story of tennis is told through the lives of our 243 hall of famers.

3The digital improvements in the museum include new interactive features. Are these designed to attract a different audience?

The inclusion of more multimedia exhibits was designed to create memorable moments for our visitors, as well as attract a younger audience. Our goal was to create exhibits that visitors could do in a group. These include a hologram of Roger Federer [which welcomes visitors and displays a shot], a 5-foot touch table with a trivia game, a broadcast booth where visitors can call a point, and touch video screens. All children age 16 and under are admitted free of charge to the museum.

4What historical artifacts are included in the renovated museum that you think are particularly interesting, and why?

More than 1,900 artifacts are on display, one-third more than at the old facility. All aspects of the collection are on display, including art, fashion, medals, trophies, furniture, decorative arts and racquets. Highlights include the earliest known painting of tennis, pants worn by tennis commentator Bud Collins, and a Ken Doll from the early 1960s.

5How is the International Tennis Hall of Fame marketing its new facility?

The International Tennis Hall of Fame recently unveiled a new logo and website, and branding campaign. The hall of fame is marketing the new museum regionally, nationally and internationally through print advertisements, radio and television spots, and social media. •
