1 What is the mission of the institute and how has that changed since its founding?
Seamen's 1920 mission was to provide "recreation, comfort and instruction" to those connected to the sea. Our constituency has changed over time with the development of the Newport waterfront, but our maritime mission and commitment to serve the community remains the same. We provide basic-needs services, including community meals, clothing, showers and laundry facilities, as well as educational programming, maritime-related exhibits and community meeting spaces.
2 The Speakers' Series was launched last year. Explain the focus of this new program.
The Speakers' Series is part of the Seamen's Education and Enrichment program. The institute has always been seen as a resource for marine-related news and research and the speakers each represent different facets of the industry. Topics have included navigation through hurricanes, women in the world of sailing, boatbuilding and rising sea levels.
3 How do the needs of the people who seek food, shelter and services at the institute change in the winter?
In winter, the need for shelter for homeless individuals is a primary concern. SCI isn't a shelter, but because of our on-site café, showers, laundry and lodging, we're uniquely equipped to open as an overnight warming center in extreme winter conditions.
4 How does the institute keep the historic building preserved?
We have a very knowledgeable House committee with an eye on long-term preservation of the building. In 2014, Seamen's was chosen as a pilot site for a resilience assessment conducted through Rhode Island Sea Grant and the University of Rhode Island's Coastal Resources Center. Because of the building's location on Bowen's Wharf, tidal flooding, storm-surge inundation and sea-level rise all have to be taken into account as we plan for the future. The assessment came back with a comprehensive plan.
5 What are your goals as the superintendent for 2017?
Strategic planning that solidifies the institute's long-term sustainability and relevance to the Newport community is my top goal. … I'll also be looking for ways to make our community café more environmentally sustainable, with a focus on fresh, affordable, locally sourced menu items. •
