7,199 new businesses formed in R.I. in 2013, up 1% over last year

PROVIDENCE – Nearly 1,616 new business entities registered with the Secretary of State’s Business Services Division in the fourth quarter of 2013, pushing the total number of new business formations for the year to 7,199, the secretary’s office announced Friday.

Total new filings in 2013 represented an increase of 1.1 percent over the 7,121 new filings business services processed last year between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31.

“I am pleased to see that we are continuing to grow new business opportunities here in Rhode Island. This is positive news for our business community,” said Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis in a release.

The Business Services Division offers resources to start, maintain and grow a business, including forms for business filings, a first-stop business information center, notary public services, authentications, probate forms and trademark protection.

Most newly formed business entities in Rhode Island choose a corporate structure that requires registering with the secretary of state, according to the release. More than 70,000 limited-liability companies and for-profit and nonprofit corporations are currently registered.
