PROVIDENCE – As Rhode Islanders dig out from yesterday’s blizzard, the National Weather Service says more snow is forecast for tonight, and for Sunday night into Monday morning.

Thursday’s blizzard, called “Niko,” dumped a foot or more of snow on parts of Rhode Island, with north Foster receiving the most snow at 14.5 inches and T.F. Green Airport in Warwick reporting 12 inches. Block Island received the least amount of snow at 6 inches, National Weather Service meteorologist Lenore Correia said Friday.

“It met blizzard conditions around most of southern New England. It was quite a storm,” Correia said.

Normal snowfall through Feb. 10 is 20.5 inches, Correia said. With yesterday’s blizzard, total snowfall for Providence is 33.4 inches, she said. To meet the criteria for a blizzard, low visibility and high winds have to continue for three hours and Niko exceeded that. Low visibility and high winds continued for five hours yesterday, she said.

Boston received 10 inches of snow. East Hartford, Conn., had the most snow in New England at 19 inches, Correia said.

For the second day in a row, many schools in Rhode Island are closed, as well as some in Massachusetts. The R.I. Public Transit Authority is continuing to restore bus service as conditions allow, after all service was suspended Thursday at 5 p.m. T.F. Green Airport only showed a few cancellations on its website early Friday morning.

National Grid is showing on its power outage map that 288 customers are without power in Kent, Newport, Providence and Washington counties. Coventry, Middletown, North Kingstown and Providence have the most customers without power. The utility said power is expected to be restored by 2:45 p.m.

Correia said 1-2 inches of snow is expected tonight after 8 into Saturday morning, and another 2-4 inches is expected Sunday night into Monday morning.
