A passion for health shows

Since 2006, ShapeUp has taken knowledge on the successful dynamics of group behavior – and run with it – to foster healthier employees.

“It was always part of the vision,” said Jackie Dube, vice president of human resources, of offering wellness incentives. “But they couldn’t be a reality until we started building revenue. As we grew, we didn’t lose sight of those [ideas].”

The firm promotes healthy lifestyles via social networking for more than 200 employers and 2 million users. Its health-centric message promotes nutritious diet, regular exercise and wellness goals. The online platform serves as a conduit to bring colleagues, friends and family members together to meet commonly beneficial milestones.

So it makes sense the company’s benefits mirror its mission. Employees’ and dependents’ health and dental insurance are paid 100 percent by ShapeUp. “It’s a very rich plan design without a high deductible,” said Dube. The firm has an on-site gym, showers and dry cleaning pickups, plus offers membership at a nearby fitness center. Healthy food deliveries by PeaPod are just another way the company offers healthful choices at work.

Founded by doctors Brad Weinberg and Rajiv Kumar while they were attending Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, ShapeUp is a testament to the success of a supportive environment – even if it’s online. As a result, client companies can enjoy reduced costs related to employees’ wellness.

And ShapeUp gets those benefits plus easy recruiting, with its reputation as one of the Best Places To Work. “We attract a lot of candidates ... we have overwhelming response,” said Dube. •
