PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices are at the lowest they have been since December 2010 in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, according to AAA Southern New England’s weekly survey of gasoline prices.
Gas prices in Rhode Island dropped 9 cents. In Massachusetts, prices dropped 8 cents over the past week.
Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are on the verge of being at or below $3 per gallon, while Massachusetts prices have fallen below $3 per gallon. The last time gasoline cost in the $3 range in both states was December 2010, AAA said.
The Nov. 10 survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $3.02 per gallon, a drop of 9 cents from last week.
Locally, prices are 27 cents lower than a month ago. Still, the current price is 8 cents more than the national average for regular unleaded of $2.94. A year ago at this time Rhode Island’s average price was 38 cents higher at $3.40.
“Strong oil supplies are outpacing demand, resulting in relief at the pump for drivers both locally and nationwide,” Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Southern New England senior vice president of public and government affairs, said in a statement. “The busy holiday travel season will be here soon, and falling gas prices will mean a little extra cash in the pockets of motorists.”
Prices range from $2.91 to $3.16 in Rhode Island. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.29 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.44 for premium unleaded and $3.59 for diesel.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular gasoline is averaging $2.97 per gallon, an 8-cent decrease from last week. Prices locally are 30 cents lower than a month ago, but 3 cents more than the national average.
A year ago at this time the Massachusetts average price was 32 cents higher at $3.29.
Prices range from $2.75 to $3.43 in Massachusetts. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas ranged from $3.27 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.42 for premium unleaded and $3.62 for diesel.
“This is the first time in almost four years that the average price for regular unleaded gasoline at the pump has fallen below three dollars a gallon and the decline comes at a great time for consumers. They’ll now have more cash to spend on holiday travel, gifts, and festivities,” Mary Maguire, AAA Southern New England director of public and legislative affairs, said about the Massachusetts prices.
