AAA: Gas prices continue decline, lowest since ’09

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices have had a double-digit drop for the third consecutive week in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, reaching their lowest point since October 2009, according to AAA Southern New England.
In Rhode Island, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.53 per gallon, a drop of 10 cents from last week, and 41 lower cents lower than a month ago. The price may be 23 cents more than the national average of $2.30 per gallon, but is $1.02 less than a year ago at this time.

In Rhode Island, unleaded regular gasoline prices range from $2.28 to $2.79, and average per-gallon prices for different grades of self-serve gas are as follows: $2.80 for midgrade unleaded, $2.93 for premium unleaded and $3.14 for diesel.

In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $2.47 per gallon, an 11 cent drop from last week, AAA said.

Massachusetts prices are 39 cents lower than a month ago, and 17 cents more than the national average for self-serve unleaded. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was $1 higher at $3.47.
Prices in Massachusetts range from $2.23 to $2.89, with midgrade unleaded at $2.74, premium unleaded at $2.89 and diesel at $3.21.

AAA offered the following fuel saving tip of the week: “Cars today don’t require any warm-up. Warming up your car for more than a few seconds just wastes fuel.”
