PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island fell 3 cents from last week, but were unchanged in Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast.
AAA’s Dec. 7 survey found that self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island is averaging $2.12 per gallon, 6 cents less than last month, but 8 cents more than the national average of $2.04. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average gas price was $2.87.
“Concerns that OPEC nations would agree to production cuts led to temporary increases in oil prices last week,” Lloyd P. Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “Those oil production cuts did not happen, sending oil prices back under $40 per barrel. Strong supplies and low oil prices are good news for motorists heading into the busy holiday travel season.”
Prices in the Ocean State range from $1.99 to $2.29, with midgrade unleaded averaging $2.44; premium unleaded, $2.60; and diesel, $2.45.
In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.07, the same as last week. Prices are 3 cents less than a month ago, but 3 cents more than the national average. A year ago, the Massachusetts average price was 72 cents higher at $2.79.
Prices in the Bay State range from $1.93 to $2.39, with midgrade unleaded at $2.38; premium unleaded, $2.57; and diesel, $2.42.
AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent.
