AAA: Gas prices hovering around $2 in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices are approaching $2 a gallon for regular unleaded in Rhode Island, and have already slipped below $2 in Massachusetts, AAA Northeast said.

AAA’s Dec. 28 survey of prices in Rhode Island found that self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.02 per gallon, a decrease of 4 cents from last week. Rhode Island’s price is 2 cents above the national average for regular unleaded of $2. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 51 cents higher at $2.53.
Prices in the Ocean State range from $1.93 to $2.09, with midgrade unleaded at $2.30; premium unleaded, $2.40; and diesel, $2.30.

In Massachusetts, self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $1.99 per gallon, 2 cents less than last week. Prices dropped 10 cents in the last month. A year ago at this time, the average price in Massachusetts was 48 cents higher at $2.47.

“Massachusetts motorists and holiday travelers are getting an early New Year’s gift – prices for regular unleaded dropping below $2 a gallon,” AAA’s Mary Maguire said in a statement.
In the Bay State, unleaded regular prices range from $1.83 to $2.39, with midgrade unleaded at $2.35; premium unleaded, $2.49; and diesel, $2.33.

AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Assemble an emergency roadside kit in case of emergencies this winter. Include jumper cables, de-icer, snow scrapers, duct tape, a reflective safety vest, blanket and hat.
