PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, unleaded gasoline is $2.38 in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, thanks to price jumps in each state of 8 and 12 cents, respectively, over the last week, according to AAA Northeast’s weekly cost survey.

AAA Northeast said the states are continuing to mirror the rest of the country as prices increase for the fourth week in a row.

In Rhode Island, the average gasoline price rose 29 cents from last month, AAA said. The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is 6 cents less than the national average for regular unleaded at $2.44. A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was $3.56.

“Seasonal maintenance at refineries plus volatile global crude oil prices are having an impact on the prices consumers pay at the pump,” Lloyd P. Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement. “Ample domestic supply is expected to keep a ceiling on prices, though there is a good chance that prices will continue to rise this spring.”
