AAA: R.I., Mass. gas prices penny less than last week

PROVIDENCE – Self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline fell a penny in Rhode Island and Massachusetts from last week, AAA Northeast said.

AAA’s latest price survey found that self-serve, regular unleaded is averaging $2.17 per gallon in Rhode Island, and $2.09 in Massachusetts. Locally, prices are 4 cents lower than a month ago in Rhode Island, and a cent less than last month in Massachusetts.

Rhode Island’s price matches the national average, and is 82 cents lower than a year ago when it reached $2.99. Prices in the Ocean State range from $2.05 to $2.30, with midgrade unleaded averaging $2.49; premium unleaded, $2.65; and diesel, $2.50.

In Massachusetts, the current price is 8 cents less than the national average, and also is 85 cents less than it was a year ago at this time. Prices of other grades of self-serve gasoline in the Bay State are as follows: midgrade unleaded, $2.42; premium unleaded, $2.60; and diesel, $2.46.

AAA offered the following fuel-saving tip: Lighten the load, and don’t haul unnecessary weight in the passenger compartment, trunk, or cargo area of a vehicle as a heavier vehicle uses more gas.
