AIE, Hologic renew contract

Posted 2/8/12

PROVIDENCE – Hologic, a women’s health care company, renewed its contract with locally based Advanced Image Enhancement Inc. Jan. 30.

AIE provides imaging enhancement tools for the medical industry. Michael J. Duarte, AIE’s founder, chairman, president and CEO, developed the company’s technology from sonar algorithms used in the detection of undersea mines while he was working at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the technology in September 2006.

Hologic, a developer, manufacturer and supplier of diagnostic products, medical imaging systems, and surgical products, uses the technology for digital mammographies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to continue our valued relationship with Hologic for the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Michael Duarte, CEO and founder of AIE.

“As a complement to Hologic’s SecurView workstations, our software will continue to provide radiologists with the ability to enhance suspicious regions of interest in mammograms with greater image quality and detail. This is particularly important in cases where dense breast tissue is involved, because they present the greatest challenges.”

In a clinical study, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s, Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Faulkner Hospital found that AIE’s enhancement software “provided a significant advantage for improving clarity of abnormalities, especially in dense breast tissue, increased radiologists’ confidence in determining their case management conclusions,” a news release said.
