PROVIDENCE – AS220 and the city of Providence are among 90 finalists for grants from ArtPlace America, which received 1,283 applications.
AS220’s proposal, “The Interactive Center of Creativity,” will house a visitor center and convening space dedicated to promoting art and culture in Rhode Island, and be paired with a retail gallery showcasing the rich supply of industrial and folk and traditional artists throughout the state. The center will be located in the Washington Street cultural corridor, enhancing city efforts to create a cultural zone downtown.

The city’s Department of Art, Culture + Tourism is collaborating with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation to produce a project called “Illuminating Trinity,” which will engage the community and build on transit-oriented development in Trinity Square in an effort to improve the square’s design.

“I am thrilled that Providence is a finalist in this prestigious grant competition,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza. “Providence is the ‘Creative Capital,’ and the arts and culture must be integrated into everything we do in our city.”
Jeanne Cola, executive director, LISC, said that the creative placemaking proposal has the potential to “transform” neighborhoods.
Umberto Crenca, artistic director and founder of AS220 added: “Realizing ‘The Interactive Center of Creativity’ will culminate 30 years of efforts by AS220, the City of Providence, its artists, and diverse cultural institutions, to help revitalize downtown Providence by providing the opportunity to promote what has become Providence’s most powerful resource: arts and culture.”
Winners of the grants will be announced in June.
