ATA opposes Raimondo toll plan

PROVIDENCE –The American Trucking Associations urges rejection of a truck-only toll plan proposed by Gov. Gina M. Raimondo in May.

Under a 10-year plan, the state will issue a $700 million revenue bond, to be repaid by electronic fees assessed to heavy commercial vehicles traveling on Interstates 95, 195 and 295, as well as on Routes 146, 6 and 10.

“ATA is very disappointed with Raimondo’s proposal to address Rhode Island’s infrastructure investment deficit solely on the back of the trucking industry,” ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said last month. “Trucking did not create the state’s current infrastructure crisis … and it is completely unfair that the industry be targeted to fix it.”

ATA opposes tolling of existing interstates as inefficient and unsafe, as it is well-known to lead to trucks diverting off larger interstates onto smaller, more-congested local highways.
