PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Board of Regents for elementary and secondary education voted to renew the charter for Providence-based charter high school, the Academy for Career Exploration.

Thursday afternoon, the board unanimously voted to grant the school a conditional renewal for two years.

The vote came after a recently non-renewal recommendation by R.I. Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist, which would have effectively closed the school after the end of the current school year. The board chose to defer Gist’s recommendation until February 2014.

The school worked with the R.I. Department of Education to develop a proposal that includes a “mathematics success plan” and measures to strengthen the school leadership.

According to the school’s release, its plan includes hiring a second school administration with expertise in curriculum and instruction, partnering with local schools to share best practices and providing additional preparation for standardized math tests, among other ventures.

“ACE has the capacity to succeed. We have already demonstrated this in many areas, and we will strive for student achievement in all academic areas,” Paul Racicot, board chair of the school, said in prepared remarks.

“Our school is educating and graduating successful students who have a solid foundation to achieve their career and life goals,” added Racicot. “We are pleased that the Board of Regents recognizes this and supports the continued operation of ACE.”
