Precix Inc., a manufacturing group in New Bedford, has had its share of struggles in the recent economy. “When automotive sneezes, we catch a cold,” said President and CEO David N. Slutz.

“But when they trend up, we trend up, too,” he said. “And coming out of the recession, we were able to pick up a lot of market share from some of our competitors who didn’t survive.”

In addition to manufacturing molded rubber goods for the automotive industry, Precix has customers in the aerospace and chemical-processing industries, and the company has responded to the needs of all its target markets.

According to Slutz, what has and will continue to set Precix apart is its dogged investment in technology. A capital improvement initiative in 2010 and 2011 added capacity and modernized capabilities at its plant, enabling quicker production of parts. “I like buying equipment,” said Slutz.

But it’s more than just a preference, he said; it’s a dire necessity. The quality control that Precix can offer is key. “We outsource virtually nothing, unlike most people,” he said. “It’s a strategic advantage. … That makes people secure about giving you business because they know you do it all yourself, you control your process.” •
