Affordability, space, parking were factors in Neighborhood Health move

PROVIDENCE – The relocation of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island from Providence to Smithfield was the result of factors including a more affordable lease, a desire to consolidate employees and expand under one roof, and adjacent parking, according to a company spokesman.
No government incentives were involved, said Tom Boucher, a spokesman for Neighborhood Health, which will move the first 200 employees to the northern suburb in January.

Neighborhood Health considered more than 40 sites before deciding to move to the Smithfield Business Park, at 910 Douglas Pike, Boucher said.
Neighborhood Health now has its headquarters in the Manchester Building at The Foundry, at 299 Promenade St., as well as in four other Foundry locations, Boucher said.
The relocation will be phased in over five years, he said, in part because of lease requirements for its remaining sites in Providence, and in part because of lack of available space at the Smithfield location.
The company will occupy the third floor of the 910 Douglas Pike building, which recently was vacated by Citizens Financial Group.
The building, built in 2001, has 36,000 square feet on each of its three floors. Two-thirds of the building, or 72,000 square feet, was available as Neighborhood Health announced the pending relocation.
The building, a short distance from Interstate 295, is accessed by RIPTA.
The Foundry also has free parking for tenants, but its largest available commercial space is 15,000 square feet, according to its website.
Neighborhood Health, which employs 435 employees, is expanding in size due to increasing enrollments. The company has 45 current openings, according to Boucher, and is expected to continue to expand through 2016.
