Affordable health membership program launched

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Access Basic Care Initiative, a membership group operating out a clinic run by Dr. Zaheer A. Shah, is now recruiting members for its affordable health membership program, targeting Rhode Islanders who may not have health insurance, according to Bruce Allan Moran, director of marketing for the new enterprise.
With a one-time $90 enrollment fee and a $45 monthly fee, members of Access Basic Care can receive the following services: a physical, blood work, ECG, and x-rays, according to Moran. There is a $15 co-pay for both primary care or urgent care visits.
The new membership program, begun three months ago, currently has more than 100 members, according to Moran. “We think we can grow to have 10,000 member patients in the next two years,” Moran said, saying that are currently 90,000 uninsured Rhode Islanders.
The membership program, which he said was not offering insurance, offers a “basic health care plan that’s preventative in nature.” The clinic is located at 65 Eddy Dowling Highway in North Smithfield.
“People shouldn’t be going to emergency rooms [for basic health care needs], Moran continued, explaining the business rationale behind the new initiative. “It’s a lot cheaper for us to handle it than for Landmark to go further in the red,” he said.
