CRANSTON – Alex and Ani has designed the Team USA Award for the U.S. Olympic Committee, the company announced Monday.
The in-house design team led by Founder and CEO Carolyn Rafaelian designed the award, which was inspired by the Statue of Liberty’s torch. Forty-four of the awards were made at the company’s Cranston factory and Alex and Ani is the first accessory firm chosen to do this, the company said in a press release.
The trophy’s torch sits on a copper base that is the same shape as the statue’s home on Liberty Island. The body of the torch is made of copper – the original material used for the Statue of Liberty, while the flame is plated in 14K gold.
The base of the award is blue sodalite stone – which is also known as the “Stone of Athletes,” believed to promote endurance and willpower.
The award ceremony is on Dec. 10 in Philadelphia. Nominees include Serena Williams and the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team who won the World Cup.
