Almeida a champion of justice

Victoria M. Almeida, shareholder and co-chair of the government relations practice group at Adler Pollock & Sheehan, has been named chairwoman for the Rhode Island area of the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society. Supreme Court for future generations.
What initially inspired you to dedicate your career to criminal justice?

My first experience in criminal law was the summer after my first year of law school when I had the opportunity to clerk in the office of the Rhode Island public defender under the mentorship of Bill Reilly, the state’s first public defender. Bill set the bar high for service to the indigent and criminally accused. This experience enriched and informed me as a lawyer. Even today, some of the most rewarding work I do is for those unable to pay for my services. We as lawyers know that unknown and unasserted rights are no rights at all.

How can future generations benefit from the preservation of the history of the Supreme Court?

The Supreme Court Historical Society plays a vital role in broadening and deepening the public’s understanding of the nation’s highest court. Through scholarly research, public outreach and innovative educational programs, the society documents the Supreme Court’s practices, traditions and rulings.

In what ways do you advocate for local businesses in your profession?

My firm and I advocate for local businesses as attorneys and are active in various business associations. We have seats on the boards of the [Greater] Providence Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council board. In addition, we have an active business practice and represent clients before local, state and federal agencies and regulatory boards and commissions, as well as in state and federal courts in a myriad of matters, including energy and public utilities, environmental and related permitting, gaming, health care, insurance, labor, land use and zoning, regulatory investigations, taxation, toxic tort and white-collar crime. •
