I have been fortunate to grow up with powerful personal and business mentors, including entrepreneurs I've been privileged to meet throughout my travels. One characteristic these successful leaders have in common is their curiosity and their devotion to personal growth. I've found that ongoing education, in its various forms, is often far more valuable than any college class.
» Every employee has something to offer.
You can't build a successful company by yourself. Build a strong team of people who believe in your mission and have the expertise you need. Every employee brings different experience and perspective to the table. Be sure to tap into these ‘teachers' at every level.
» Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Mistakes or missteps can be excellent teachers as long as you learn, grow and course-correct as a result.
» Move out of your comfort zone.
Everyone has strengths in specific areas of business. I love research, but in a startup company like mine, I wear many hats in many different areas. The best advice I've been given is to jump in and learn by doing.
» Listen to your customers.
Our first customer is our independent consultant – and we engage them as much as we can because they are on the front lines. Our goal is to give them all the tools they need to be successful – and improve on these tools consistently. We only know what's working and not working by talking – and listening – to them on a daily basis. •
