In U.S., R.I. ranks 14th for college graduates, 37th for high school

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Rhode Island ranks 14th in the United States for the percentage of its population with a bachelor’s degree or higher, according to a Business Journals report.

Although the Ocean State ranked well for the percentage of its population 25 and older who have bachelor’s degrees, Rhode Island ranked 37th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia for the percentage of its population 25 and older who have a high school degree or higher.

Of Rhode Island’s 2011 population of 708,587 of 25 and older, 84.3 percent of its population has a high school diploma or higher, the 37th best in the United States. Comparatively, Wyoming ranked highest with 91.9 percent of its 25 and older population having a high school diploma.

Neighboring Massachusetts ranked 18th in the United States with 88.9 percent of its population possessing at least a high school diploma. Massachusetts ranked second in the U.S., behind Washington, D.C., for the percentage of its population with at least a bachelor’s degree: 38.7 percent.

Rhode Island ranked 14th for the percentage of its 25 and older population with a bachelor’s degree: 30.6 percent.

Of the New England states, Rhode Island ranked worst for the number of high school graduates and beat out only Maine for the highest percentage of its population with a bachelor’s degree.

On a national level, 85.4 percent of all adults 25 and older in the United States have high school diplomas and 28.2 percent have bachelor’s degrees.

The rankings were based on numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau and the 2011 American Community Survey.
