WJAR-TV NBC 10 recently awarded a $5,000 donation to the Ocean State Animal Coalition, a nonprofit organization that owns the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic. The funds will be used to assist pet owners who can’t afford to have their pets sterilized.
WJAR donated the money as a part of its Help These Faces challenge, in which it pledged to donate $5,000 to the Coalition if the NBC 10 Facebook page reached 50,000 fans in February.
According to the Ocean State Animal Coalition, more than 15,000 animals enter Rhode Island shelters each year. The coalition seeks to reduce that number by providing subsidized spay/neuter services for privately owned cats and dogs, in addition to partnering with more than 70 shelters and rescue organizations in southern New England.
The coalition was founded by the Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island, PawsWatch, Potter League for Animals, Providence Animal Control, Providence Animal Rescue League, Rhode Island Animal Control Officers’ Association and Westerly Animal Control. •
