PROVIDENCE – Luis A. Aponte was elected City Council president on Tuesday, defeating councilman Nicholas J. Narducci Jr. in a 9-6 vote, according to information from the city clerk’s office.
Councilors Aponte, Kevin Jackson, Carmen Castillo, Michael J. Correira, Mary Kay Harris, Terrence M. Hassett, John J. Igliozzi, Sabina Matos and Bryan Principe all cast votes for Aponte.
Voting for Narducci were Narducci, Wilbur W. Jennings Jr., Jo-Ann Ryan, David A. Salvatore, Seth Yurdin and Samuel D. Zurier.
Matos was elected president pro tempore.
WPRI-TV CBS 12 reported that Aponte is the City Council’s first Latino president, and that it was unusual for a floor vote to be held for the president position; members usually settle the matter behind closed doors so they can vote unanimously for a president on inauguration day.
The city clerk’s office also reported that Jackson is the council majority leader, while Hassett is the senior deputy majority leader and Correira is the deputy majority leader.
