Aquidneck Land Trust announces Merritt Neighborhood Fund grant recipients

MIDDLETOWN – Aquidneck Land Trust announced the eight recipients of its 2016 Merritt Neighborhood Fund grants totaling $6,999.74, aimed at preserving small parks, playgrounds and other natural spaces, on June 6.

Chuck Allott, Aquidneck Land Trust executive director, said the grants are given to those organizations helping to “reclaim parcels for community good.”

He added: “These eight grant recipients serve as environmental stewardship role models and they are vital to Aquidneck Island’s future. We congratulate them and look forward to seeing their projects grow.”

The 2016 Merritt Neighborhood Fund grant recipients are:

  • Aquidneck Community Table, which received $2,500 for the installation of the Friends Meeting House Community Gardens
  • Off Broadway Neighborhood Association/City of Newport, which received $175 to support the installation of a flagpole
  • Daffodillion, which received $500 to purchase additional daffodil bulbs to help continue to beautify the city of Newport
  • Friends of the Waterfront, which received $1,000 to support additional dinghy plantings
  • Rogers High School, which received $275 to support the Newport Project
  • Portsmouth Dog Park, which received $1,275 to help establish an off-leash dog park
  • Portsmouth Garden Club, which received $474.74 for the improvement of the Portsmouth Free Library garden and conservation practices
  • Thompson Middle School, which received $800 for materials to build an outdoor classroom
  • The Aquidneck Land Trust, established in 1999, presents these grants in honor of the late Peter M. Merritt, the organization’s president emeritus.
