Armory repair work begins

PROVIDENCE – Structural stabilization work has begun on the Cranston Street Armory, one of the properties consistently identified as one of the most endangered in Providence.

The vacated structure, owned by the city, dates to 1907.

In July, a contractor erected scaffolding around the West Tower, as part of a $1.5 million project to maintain the building in its areas of most critical disrepair, including the tower and its turrets, according to Carole Cornelison, division director for the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, within the state Department of Administration.

The contractor is RD Preservation Co.

In January, the Providence Preservation Society put it back on its annual list of the city’s most endangered sites after former Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee cancelled nearly $3 million in renovations and called for a feasibility study about how to repurpose it.

The exterior work is expected to continue through summer of 2016.
