Art museum raises $15K at party

NEWPORT – The Newport Art Museum raised $15,000 on Feb. 27 at a Midwinter White Party.
Held in the museum’s historic John N.A. Griswold House at 76 Bellevue Ave., the party featured about 200 guests dressed in their “winter whites,” according to the museum’s emailed newsletter distributed earlier this month.
Hosted by Kristen Coates and Chris Wyllie, chairpersons of the museum’s Contemporaries Committee, the event helped to raise money that will benefit the museum’s education, exhibitions and historic preservation efforts and programming.
The museum’s galleries were transformed, with visitors enjoying the Kendell Seafood Ice Lounge and Bar, a Winter Games Room, and the Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty Winter Woods.
This “winter paradise” proved popular with the crowd, said Rebecca Bertrand, the museum’s director of development and a member of the committee.
“The Midwinter White Party is sure to become a trademark of the Newport winter social scene,” Bertrand said.
The party also featured games, prizes, dancing, and a photo booth in the shape of an igloo created by local artist James Langston, among other attractions. More than 50 area businesses also contributed to a raffle.
