Arts council awards Arts & Cultural Alliance

WARWICK – The R.I. State Council on the Arts, in celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week, awarded its second annual Arts in Tourism Award to the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County at a Tourism Unity luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick (Airport) in Warwick on May 8.
“We are truly grateful to be selected,” said Chris Offenberg, president of the alliance. “Our success is directly attributable to our members, the artists and art organizations, as well as our volunteer board of directors … and institutional partners. We are an example of how collaboration benefits the community as a whole, including our members, residents, sponsors, and businesses.”
At the same luncheon, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee presented the 2012 Special Recognition Award to Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit in recognition of the department’s development, maintenance and enhancement of the state’s natural assets.
“Visiting our parks, beaches, farms, historic sites, and bikeways is an experience that brings joy to our life,” Coit said. “These spectacular natural places are what make Rhode Island truly special, and sharing them with family, friends and visitors creates memories that will last a lifetime.”
The luncheon celebrated efforts in Rhode Island’s $5.2 billion travel and tourism industry.
