Ashton Village renovation preserves historic character

CUMBERLAND – Ashton Village, a development of 53 homes in the historic mill village of Cumberland, was celebrated on Monday with a ribbon cutting.
The village is comprised of renovated mill buildings, which were built by the Lonsdale Company in 1867 to house the workers of the adjacent Ashton Mill. The renovation work was undertaken by Valley Affordable Housing Corp.
The mill itself is on the National Register of Historic Places.
While renovating the buildings at Ashton Village, Valley Affordable Housing Corp. tried to preserve their historic character, according to a news release.
The village, a part of the Blackstone River Valley Corridor, is adjacent to the Blackstone River Bikeway and State Park and is within walking distance of schools, shops and services.
