PROVIDENCE – Ann C. Assumpico was named the 13th superintendent of the State Police, the first woman to hold the position, according to an announcement by Gov. Gina M. Raimondo on Thursday.
Calling Assumpico a “trooper’s trooper,” Raimondo, in a statement, said Assumpico “embodies the best of Rhode Island” and the idea that great achievements come through hard work.
Assumpico, who will serve as “acting Colonel” until her official swearing in ceremony later this year, replaces Steven G. O’Donnell who retired in September.

“For nearly 40 years, I’ve put on a uniform and gone to work every day to serve the people of Rhode Island,” said Assumpico, who has held positions at the Adult Correctional Institution, Coventry Police Department and most recently as a captain in the State Police command staff.
Assumpico joined the State Police in 1992.

“The State Police have a storied tradition and a stellar reputation. I look forward to building on that strength and opening the doors of the State Police to more Rhode Islanders,” she added.
Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin also congratulated Assumpico and said her on-the-job experience will guide her in this role.

“While this is a historic moment for the State Police and law enforcement in Rhode Island as Colonel Assumpico is the first woman to lead any police agency in the state, it is her leadership skills for which I believe her appointment is a great choice and the right choice,” he said.

Lt. Governor Daniel J. McKee also weighed in, applauding Raimondo for promoting from within the ranks of the State Police.
“The State Police is one of Rhode Island’s finest and most well-respected institutions. I am confident Colonel Assumpico will carry on its longstanding tradition of excellence and integrity,” McKee said.
