Westerly Hospital Auxiliary and the Mary C. Pucci Foundation recently awarded six $1,000 scholarships to local students who plan to pursue or advance their career in health care.
Recipients were selected from a large field of applicants who submitted their career plans, as well as academic and extracurricular achievements. Each student also wrote an essay explaining why they chose a career path in health care.
One of the scholarships was the Mary C. Pucci Scholarship, which honors a student who wishes to pursue a career in “hands on” patient care. This year’s recipient was David Turco, a student at Quinnipiac University who is pursuing a career as a physician.
The other five recipients were Heather Arnold, a student at New England Institute of Technology, who is pursuing a career in nursing; Danielle Gilluly, who will study nursing at the University of New England; Emily Grey, who will pursue biomedical engineering at the University of Rochester; Joyce Hou, who will study pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island; and Rochelle Wang, who plans to be a physician’s assistant and will attend Quinnipiac University. •
