WARWICK – SATA Azores Airlines is expanding its service at T.F. Green Airport next year, adding flights to mainland Europe in Portugal, and also offering them earlier in the season.

Azores Airlines debuted its service this past summer to Ponta Delgada, Azores, and had approximately 4,000 passengers take weekly flights on Thursdays from Green during July and August, Lucia Miguel-Botelho, assistant managing director, SATA Azores Airlines, said Wednesday.

Service to the Azores will resume June 2 and run through Sept. 29, she said. In addition, from the Azores there will be connecting flights to Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, and its capital two hours away, Lisbon. Flights will run once a week, on Fridays, she said, adding that the airline switched flights to Fridays due to customer requests. The airline expects its passenger numbers to grow to 6,000 or 7,000 next year with the additional stops, she said.

Miguel-Botelho said the airline wanted to expand service at Green because “it is so convenient for a lot of Portuguese people” who live in the region.
“We did very well last year,” she said.

The airline also is expanding its service to Boston’s Logan Airport, offering connections from Ponta Delgada to Barcelona, Spain, starting March 28 and running until Oct. 27. Flights from Boston to Ponta Delgada, connecting to Cape Verde, will begin June 1 and run through Oct. 26, she said.
