PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island will lay off approximately 80 employees as a result of a new strategic relationship with technology company Dell.

“Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced that it has reached agreement on a new strategic relationship with Dell, which will support us in our goal of making health care affordable and simple for the residents of Rhode Island. Building on a decade of work together, this enhanced relationship will leverage the scale and expertise of Dell in health plan operations to benefit BCBSRI customers,” according to a statement from BCBSRI spokeswoman Stacy Paterno.

She said as a result of this agreement, approximately 130 employees will become employees of Dell in Rhode Island over an 18-month period. At the end of that period, approximately 80 employees will no longer be employed by Blue Cross or Dell, the statement said.

“We will support all impacted employees with a full package of benefits and transition services,” the statement said.
