BLS: Compensation costs highest in Northeast for private employers

PROVIDENCE – Private industry costs for employee compensation in the Northeast were highest among the four national regions in September at $39.06 per hour, the New England Information Office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday.
The South had the lowest costs at $29.46 per hour, while the Midwest had $29.90 and West, $33.61. The national average was $32.27 per hour.
New England was slightly behind the Northeast at $38.92 in costs; in New England, wages and salaries comprised 70.2 percent of hourly total compensation costs (at $27.33 per hour), and total benefits accounted for 29.8 percent (at $11.59 per hour).
Total benefit costs to employers within New England were comprised of the following categories: Health insurance $3.03 per hour worked; legally required benefits (which includes Social Security and Medicare) $2.88 per hour; paid leave (which includes vacation, holiday, sick and personal leave categories) at $2.86 per hour; and retirement and savings at $1.53 per hour.
