BLS: Jobless rate in Prov.-Warwick metro dips in June

PROVIDENCE – The Providence-Warwick metropolitan area was one of 351 metro areas out of 387 that experienced a year-over-year drop in its jobless rate in June, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The unemployment rate in the metro area fell to 5.6 percent from 7.2 percent a year earlier, but is still higher than the national unemployment rate of 5.5 percent, which is not seasonally adjusted.
Lincoln, Neb., and Fargo, N.D.-Minn., had the lowest unemployment rates nationwide in June at 2.6 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively. Yuma, Ariz., and El Centro, Calif., had the highest unemployment rates, 22.6 percent and 21.1 percent, respectively, according to the federal agency.
The number of unemployed in the region fell to 38,700 in June from 49,500 a year earlier. At the same time the civilian labor force grew year over year to 692,000 from 684,200.
In June, 317 metropolitan areas, including the Providence-Warwick metropolitan area, had over-the-year increases in nonfarm employment, while 61 had decreases, and nine had no change.
