BLS: New England third-lowest jobless rate in June

PROVIDENCE – New England had the third-lowest unemployment rate in June among the nine geographic divisions nationwide at 4.8 percent in June, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The lowest rate recorded in June was 4.3 percent for the West North Central region, which includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. West South Central – Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas – was the next lowest at 4.6 percent.
The highest jobless rate was in the Pacific region – Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington – at 6.1 percent, the federal agency said.
All nine divisions had statistically significant rate declines from a year earlier, and New England was among the divisions that had the largest decreases at 1.1 percent.
New England’s unemployment rate also is below the national jobless rate of 5.3 percent, the BLS said.
Rhode Island’s jobless rate in June at 5.9 percent was not significantly higher than the nation’s, but the Ocean State had the largest over-the-year decline at 1.8 percentage points, the BLS said.
“In fact, Rhode Island had the largest jobless rate decline among the 24 states nationwide that had significant rate decreases from June 2014,” the BLS said.
The number of unemployed in Rhode Island fell 23 percent to 33,000 in June from 42,900 in June 2014.
