PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island was among 29 states which saw their jobless rates drop significantly year over year in March, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Rhode Island’s jobless rate in March was 6.3 percent, a 1.9 percentage point drop from 8.2 percent in March 2014, the agency said.
Rhode Island’s unemployment rate is still higher than the national rate, which was 5.5 percent.
For the second month in a row, Connecticut’s jobless rate was higher than Rhode Island’s, registering 6.4 percent.
Rhode Island is tied with Georgia and Tennessee for the seventh highest unemployment rate in the nation. Connecticut’s rate is sixth highest.
Vermont and New Hampshire were among states with the lowest rates at 3.8 and 3.9 percent, respectively. Massachusetts and Maine both had rates of 4.8 percent.
Rhode Island’s labor force numbered 551,700 in March, a 0.6 percent decrease from March 2014’s 555,200. Unemployed residents number 34,600, a 24 percent drop from March 2014’s 45,800.
