Baker announces MBTA plan for winter weather

BOSTON – Gov. Charlie D. Baker last week announced an $82.7 million Mass. Bay Transit Authority Winter Resiliency Plan for snow-removal equipment and infrastructure upgrades and operations during harsh weather to improve service reliability.

The plan will be funded through $62 million in federal formula funds for capital investments, $10 million in nonfederal, MBTA capital funds and $11.7 million in operating funds. The plan will be presented to the Mass. Department of Transportation for approval this week and will focus on:

n Third-rail replacements and heater upgrades.

n Snow-fence installation.

n Emergency power generators to supplement existing subway and facility power as needed.

n Additional snow-removal contract services, as needed, to remove snow and ice at stations, facilities and other critical-operations areas.
