Baker announces hiring freeze, review in Mass.

BOSTON – Attempting to address a projected budgetary shortfall, Gov. Charlie D. Baker this month issued a hiring freeze across the entire state government while also announcing a comprehensive review of the state’s departments.
The department reviews will be completed within the first 100 days of his administration, Baker said in a statement. Additionally, Baker directed cabinet members to initiate a review of all contract amendments made since Sept. 1, 2014, as well as a review of all procurement processes currently underway.
While government estimates have put the project fiscal 2015 deficit at $325 million, the fiscal watchdog group Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation has said that hole could climb to $1 billion.
The hiring freeze directs agencies to withdraw job postings for vacant positions, prohibits the hiring of new contract employees and limits paid internships and temporary staff. •
