BankNewport Vice President and Middletown Branch Manager Linda Buchanan recently joined fourth, fifth and sixth graders during Norman Bird Sanctuary’s summer camp Explorers Program after BankNewport extended a $5,000 grant to the sanctuary.
The grant will provide needs-based summer camp scholarship assistance for the sanctuary’s environmental-education programming.
The Norman Bird Sanctuary is a nonprofit nature center that offers seven camp programs for grades pre-K through 12 that teach STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) and other core curriculums such as art, communication and history through environmental education, service learning and experience. The environmental-literacy programs also help youths develop interpersonal and critical thinking and leadership skills.
Educational programs include activities such as hikes, team-building activities, nature discovery and geology as young adventurers traverse across more than 325 acres of natural land and seven miles of trails. There is also a nature museum and classroom for science learning. •
