BankNewport recently contributed $5,000 to the Housing Hotline’s “You Can Make a Difference” emergency fund to help support those experiencing a crisis with shelter and basic human needs.

The Housing Hotline, an organization located in Newport, was originally established in 1979 by James “Jimmy” Winters, a Newport police officer, to help the city’s homeless population. Since, the organization has grown to provide assistance and emergency support, including providing emergency shelter in local hotels in the winter, utility and fuel assistance, clothing, food, furniture, transportation, landlord/tenant handbooks and legal referrals. In addition, it offers workshops to educate clients regarding local health issues, laws and training programs.

Housing Hotline, which served 1,000 people in 2012, works collaboratively with area human services organizations, regularly referring clients to specialized resources. Except for limited state grants, Housing Hotline relies on individual and community donations and proceeds from an annual fundraiser. •
