BankRI Giving Tree nets more than 1,200 gifts for children in need

PROVIDENCE – Bank Rhode Island branches across the state have been collecting gifts for local children for three weeks as part of its 19th annual Holiday Giving Tree campaign, and this year have outdone themselves, amassing more than 1,200 gifts to distribute to Rhode Island children in need.

Mark J. Meiklejohn, BankRI president and CEO, said even after almost two decades, he continues to be “amazed by the generosity of [the] community.”

“Our Holiday Giving Tree not only captures the spirit of the season and the importance of helping others, it also highlights the sentiment that it truly is better to give than to receive,” he said.

From Nov. 25 to Dec. 17, each BankRI branch was home to a Holiday Giving Tree decorated with ornaments on which children served by that branch’s nonprofit partner wrote their holiday wish list. Some of the most popular items this year included princess play sets, superhero toys, board games, toy cars and trucks, Legos and sporting equipment.
