Bank Rhode Island recently announced that it has awarded a $5,000 grant to Breakthrough Providence. The organization, formerly known as Providence Summerbridge, helps to provide pathways to college for low-income, academically motivated middle-school students in Providence public schools and also encourages high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

The BankRI funds will aid Summerbridge’s Teacher Training Program, which provides leadership development and preprofessional programs for students ages 16 to 22. About 60 of the program’s participants will be hired during the academic year to serve as teachers and tutors.

“BankRI is proud to support Breakthrough Providence and their innovative educational programs serving middle school, high school and college students,” said Mark Meiklejohn, president and CEO of BankRI. “The workforce development opportunities provided to local youth offer invaluable training by seasoned professional educators in both theoretical and practical teaching methodologies.”
