BankRI holding food drive

PROVIDENCE – The annual food drive in support of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank is more than halfway through its seven-week stretch, ending Sept. 16.

All 19 Bank Rhode Island branches are accepting food donations, which will be donated to a local food pantry, ensuring the community’s donations impact the local population of those who are most in need.

The drive coincides with Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s Summer Food Drive, which helps support families during the end of summer, before children return to school and can access the meals provided during the academic year.

Over the past four years, Mark J. Meiklejohn, president and CEO of BankRI, said the drive has collected more than 60 tons of donated food.

“Families with already limited budgets often struggle more as summer winds down – every donation we receive, no matter the size, will help greatly,” he added.

BankRI locations will have food collection bins in their lobbies until Sept. 16. Some of the most-needed items include peanut butter, tuna, nutritious breakfast cereals, canned beans, whole-wheat pasta, tomato sauce and canned fruits and vegetables.
