WASHINGTON – The number of banks headquartered in Rhode Island decreased during 2013, a trend that has continued for the past three years, according to data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The trend in the declining number of bank headquarters has been seen in several New England states during the past year.
Ten banks were based in the Ocean State as of the end of the third quarter of 2013, the latest FDIC data available on the subject. That compares to 13 banks headquartered the state as of the end of third quarter 2012. Rhode Island had 14 banks headquartered in the state at year-end 2011.
Massachusetts also saw a decline, with 154 banks headquartered in the state at the close of third quarter 2013, down from 155 at the end of third quarter 2012. That’s down from 160 banks headquartered in Massachusetts at the end of 2011.
New Hampshire had 20 state-based banks at the end of third quarter 2013, down from 22 at the same time a year earlier and down from 23 at year-end 2011.
Connecticut saw a similar decline with 46 banks headquartered in the state at the end of third quarter 2013, down from 52 at the time the previous year, down from 53 at year-end 2011.
The 2013 end-of-year statistics will be released by the FDIC in mid-to-late February, agency spokesman David Barr said.
