Bay View book drive benefits McAuley Village

After students at Bay View Academy Middle School in East Providence learned that toddlers residing at McAuley Village in Providence did not have “board” books to read, they recently held a book drive to benefit the children living in the two-year transitional-housing program. More than 500 books were collected for McAuley Village as a result of the initiative.
Students at the independent Catholic school for girls, St. Mary Academy – Bay View, are not unfamiliar with giving back to the community, either. The upper, middle and lower school each has a group where students organize and participate in several philanthropic events.
Many events and fundraisers are held for McAuley in particular (because both organizations are sponsored by Sisters of Mercy), including one academywide school drive where students raised money to buy shoes for McAuley children. The giving event was held at Nordstrom, where children picked out two pairs of Toms shoes to bring home.
Last Christmas, the upper school’s Mercy Action Club hosted a fair that allowed children to “buy presents” for their mothers. These acts of kindness and generosity are emphasized through teachings and are brought to fruition through the array of events that the school holds for families in need. •
